Masters

The Masters are upon us and I can not remember a major with this much anticipation.   Tiger is obviously the talk of Augusta and some people seem to think that this will distract Tiger.  Listen, when was the last Masters Tiger played in that all the talk wasn’t about him?  He knows how to handle this and I don’t think he has ever been this focused.  So many people are saying how much of a distraction his personal life will be this weekend..  The guy obviously had some distractions going on before.  I mean really, he was texting porn stars about anal sex before.  I would say that would be a little bit of a distraction.  I’m pulling for him.  He asked for my forgiveness and I said, “you got it Tiger.”

When I think about making a 100 million  a year, I have to accept the fact that I would probably make some mistakes.  I would hope that sleeping with attractive women all over the world wouldn’t be one of them (unless I was not married, then this is exactly what I would be doing) but I have no doubt that I would screw up some things.  I’m sure I would hurt some peoples feelings getting caught up in my own greed and not holding myself to the same standard as everyone else.  And when this happened I would hope that the people that I did effect on would find it in themselves to forgive me.  I’m not suggesting that he does not disserve some consequences, but isn’t that for him and God, I mean Buddha, to take up?

So moving on to Tiger and the Masters.  How is he going to do?  Do you care?  Are you pulling for him?  Are you pulling against him?  Are you tired of hearing his name?  If you are not pulling for him, then  who are you pulling for?

Its Masters Week so lets have some Masters talk.  I also will be trying to post Golf related videos this week.

  1. It's the greatest sporting event in the world, also with the coolest theme song composed by none other than Kenny Loggins brother. These old farts down there really get how to run a golf tourney even with all the Tiger shit going on. They got it out of the way on Monday and noone is really giving a shit about how the gallery is going to act now. They just want to see some good golf. Call me a hater, but golf was more enjoyable before Tiger. Don't get me wrong, I like Tiger(don't want him to break Jack's record) but he brought in a lot of fans that know nothing about etiquette and respect for the game. I also think Augusta National was set up better before they "Tiger proofed" it. They basically made it easier for him to win. With all that being said, my picks this week to make a strong showing are the guys that can hit the ball very high, work it either way and can putt:

Els= he's finally putting like he did in the mid/late 90's

Kuchar= he's having a helluva year. Hope being paired with Tegro doesn't rattle him.

DD= all the ups and downs and having to battle his way back into Augusta have him determined to prove the doubters wrong. If you remember and follow golf like I do he should have at least 2 green jackets already. He can play this course.

Couples: My favorite golfer of all time. If he can calm his nerves on the short putts and stop jabbing them he can win this even at the age of 50. He's still longer than 90% of the young guys and just hits towering irons. He's also had waaaaaayyyyy more ass than Tiger.

If DD can't pull off a miracle, I want Kenny Perry to win it with a birdie at 18 to beat Tiger.

  3. I am tired of hearing about his personal life. My thoughts are that is between him and his smoking hot wife. To be honest, I cannot believe some of the skanks that he nailed when he has that to go home to, but its none of my business. I am ready for the baddest dude to ever swing a golf club to get back to work and win the damn Masters. Let's face it, golf just isn't the same on Sundays when Tiger isn't in the mix. I mean, it is fun to guess what cup size Mickelson is but that is where the fun ends. Let's go Eldrick.

  4. Did you mention David Duval?? Really? I'm kind of with both of you guys here. I enjoy watching golf more when Tiger is in the field but hate the "GET IN THE HOLE!!" screams that Tiger fans have brought to the table.

I will have my Masters picks tomorrow morning.

  5. Until Tiger beats Jacks record is is the 2nd baddest dude. Even when he does just think about Jack's record in the majors:
    Summary of major championship performances
    Starts - 163
    Wins - 18
    2nd place finishes - 19
    Top-three finishes - 46
    Top-five finishes - 56
    Top-10 finishes - 73
Longest streak of top-10s in majors - 13
Longest streak of consecutive cuts made in majors - 39
All of the above figures are stand-alone records with the exception of the longest streak of consecutive cuts made in majors at 39 which was equaled by Tiger Woods.

  6. I still think Tiger is better - I think there is more parody now than ever before in all sports. This is why Jimmie Johnson hasnt won as many cups as Sr. but i think what he has done is more impressive. That said, I still believe that Tiger needs to win some more majors before I can have an argument to back this up. Right now, its my opinion but once Tiger gets closer to the 18, then it will become a fact.

  7. There are no Arnold Palmers, Gary Players, Tom Watsons, Lee Trevinos out in the golfing world right now. Only people newer to the game would argue Tiger is better than Jack. Sorry dude.

  8. Another thing. Put Tiger in the 80's/early 90's and Nick Faldo would make him cry like a Joselyn James getting DP. The terminator would make Tiger rethink who the most dominate dude is between the ropes.

  9. would you agree that Golf enthusiast (like yourself) dont want Tiger to be the best? I'm not being a smart ass here either reese. When it comes to football and baseball i consider myself just as knowledgeable as anyone else, but when it comes to golf, i watch the majors. but i get the feeling that Tiger talk sometimes rubs golf purest the wrong way just like steroids do baseball guys...

so i ask you, whats a hard number of majors that tiger needs to win for yourself to consider him the greatest?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Tiger most likely will break Jack's record of Majors. That will not bother me. His golf game does not bother me at all. The number of majors will not influence me to change my mind unless he just goes on a run and wins like 25. My feeling is you put both of them in their prime with the same equipment and Jack beats Tiger 7 out of 10 times. That's my way of thinking on this. We probably would not be having this discussion had Bobby Jones not retired.

    ReplyDelete
  11. speaking of bobby jones. i read a message he wrote in 1967 in reference to the masters. it was amazing how it relates to this years masters. here it is...

"In golf, customs of etiquette and decorum are just as important as rules governing play. It is appropriate for spectators to applaud successful strokes in proportion to difficulty but excessive demonstrations by a player or his partisans are not proper because of the possible effects upon other competitors." Most distressing to those who love the game of golf is the applauding or cheering or misplays or misfortunes of a player. Such occurrences have been rare at The Masters but we must eliminate them entirely if our patrons are to continue to merit their reputation as the most knowledgeable and considerate in the world."

  13. Reese, I will concede that until Tiger wins #19 he is the 2nd baddest dude. However, Nicklaus himself has even said that about the only part of the game that he was better than Tiger was driving accuracy. And while the Golden Bears stats are phenomenal, most of those numbers are irrelevant. Who actually cares about 2nd & 3rds? I grew up watching golf with my old man (helluva guy) and he idolized Jack Nicklaus. I remember watching the 86 Masters and seeing my old man get a little choked up. I know the importance of Jack and what he brought to the game. I have been watching/playing/following golf for over 25 years so I am far from a newcomer and I think Tiger is better than Jack. However, this will not and cannot ever be proven. I think that at the end of time people will say that Jack was the best golfer ever....in his day and that Tiger was the best golfer ever...in his day. So let's agree to disagree.

  14. Spot on, but tell that to Seve. They gave him hell back in the 80's.

  16. Good point BP. I do have a feeling that we will also have an '86 moment with Tiger in about 20 years. I think Jack was a lot like Tiger. Not everyone liked him. Do ya'll remember Jack making a run at the '96 or '98 Maters(i think and know he was 56 at the time)? Now that gave me goose bumps.

  17. I would argue that that Jack was more talented than Tiger. Tiger is the hardest working guy in the history of the tour and that has a lot to do with how good he is. Don't get me wrong he has a lot of natural talent and a gift for playing golf, it is like Babe Ruth swatting 715 while drinking beer and eating hot dogs in the dug out. I am just saying Jack a lot more compettion with the players that Reese mentioned, a club head the size of an egg, and a workoug regiment that rivals mine. It was just all pure talent. Tigers work ethic is definatly what sets him apart here. Many tour players have said that if Freddie Couples practiced AT ALL he would still compete weekly on the PGA tour and sometimes still does ( he blew a short put to win The Master several years ago) he just has that much talent but lacks Tigers work ethic.

  18. i dont think the "new comer" comment was directed at you pully - it was me. Reese knows that i am a new comer to golf and that was where i feel that he was coming from on that comment.

    ReplyDelete
  19. New comer is not directed at anyone. I'll admit when Tiger came onto the seen all the "new comers" or "democrats", if that's what you want to call them, jumped on the bandwagon and it rubbed me the wrong way.
I'm with you BP, Couples minus a bad back and marital problems had the talent to be one of the best ever. Hell, Mickleson shits more talent every morning that Tiger has. He's just fucked up in the head.

  20. Sorry for the multiple posts. My computer has been acting up all day. I think that at the end of the day people are going to remember Jack as the greatest golfer of his era and Tiger as the best golfer of his era. Wouldn't it be SWEET if we could have a Jack - Tiger showdown when they are both on their primes?? And Reese, I do remember that last run at the Masters by Nicklaus. Definitely a goose bump moment.

  21. Joe. On a side note, if you're watching this weekend and wonder where in the hell Gary McCord is, you won't hear him. He once made fun of Augusta's greens saying they were slicker than a bikini wax. That didn't sit to well with the committee. He also let me know one year at Hilton Head what "D.A.H." was when asked by Jim Nance what Loren Roberts' (aka Boss of the Moss) caddy said to him. "Jim that's Dead Ass Heart, meaning middle of the green". That's one of my favorite sayings along with one I heard a yuppie say at a pre Tiger practice round at Augusta "Augusta, it's a 9 iron". I say that 90% of the time i hit a 9.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ok, this has gone on long enough. Reese you are an idiot. Fact is, Tiger is the best ever and when all stats are compiled, it won't even be close. And I like Tiger, but I've always been a HUGE Nicklaus fan. The Masters in the late 90's was one of my top sports moments ever. I'll never forget when the broadcast started that day and it was all focused on Jack making his run. Jack could still play Augusta and probably make the cut 50% of the time. But here's the deal when you talk about golfing talent. This is the kid who was making legitimate birdies and breaking 50 on a 9 hole round before he was 5 years old. Think about that. He won 3 straight US Junior Amateurs, followed by 3 straight US Amateurs, followed by his first Masters title all in succession. Reese has nover liked Tiger and will make up anything to make it sound like he's not the best of all time, but deep down he knows. And all professional golfers should send Tiger a Christmas present and a thank you letter for the money "HE" has brought to the game.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ok so the players can thank Tiger for elevating the game, but who do you thank for getting you involved with this great game? You're an idiot thinking Jack could make the cut now. He was great but not anymore. He's 70. Me and you million, million, million next time buddy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well maybe I lost a few years there, but Jack could make the cut in his early 60's. And let's look at your favorites to win...
Els - legitimate choice, he's won 2 of his last 3 tournies and usually plays well at Augusta.

Kuchar - Tech guy, end of story
    Duval - Ditto
Couples - He's been dominating the Seniors tour, but I doubt he'll be able to keep up with the limber backs.

I really would like to see Kenny Perry win it as well. It hurt to watch last year play out the way it did.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah I'll admit DD is me being a homer somewhat. I just have this feeling like I did when Len Mattice lost to Weir in a playoff. I had Mattice in my fantasy picks that year.
Kuchar is playing as solid as anyone. I tried to pick kinda like fantasy and not just pick Tiger, Phil, Els, Goosen, but A, B, C, and D players. That's really all I was trying to do. Couples is working it right to left because it's easier on his back. He's always played this tourney well and his draw will help him. I also like Luke Donald.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i just sent you guys a masters pickem deal. sign up NOW!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree, Kuchar is having a solid year. He's been a somewhat underachieving professional since he set the bar so high for himself after the year he played in the Masters after winning the US Amateur. I like him even though he is a Techie. Although my boy Ian Woosnam hasn't made any noise in the past decade, watch out, word is his caddy "found something in the octane" if you know what I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm in Joe. John I hope Woozie's caddy doesn't carry 15 clubs like his last caddy did. I thought the Welshman sp? was going to beat his ass on the 1st tee. I hope he plays well. I'd love to see some old washed up past champion win. Gentle Ben or someone like that.
