Could March Madness be better?

I think it can be done and easily. I must admit I did not think of this, this one comes from the thoughts of Skip Bayless which I have expanded upon. I think 64 is perfect they should drop the play in game but other than that I am ok with the current tournament format. Here is where my problem occurs. I am not a fan of the Mid-Major and lower teams having a conference tournament, I would even be ok the major conferences not having one either, but if a lesser team from one of those conferences wins and gets and automatic bid I can understand their argument. However if a team is in the Ohio Valley Conf., the Ohio Valley usually only sends one school the conference champ, occasionally they will have an at large bid which is fine we are not here to discuss at large bids. If Murray St. who is the best team in the conference at the moment at 26-3 and will win the regular season conference championship, should take out Morehead St. 19-9 in the first round and then get upset in the second round. Now if that were to happen Murray state having almost 30 wins would probably get an at large bid but because they got beat a team in a horrible conf. with just over 20 wins would aslo go on an automatic bid. Thus pushing a bubble team, which this year especially means UNC, UCONN, UCLA, Louisville, and GT would all get passed over Austin Peay 16-13 (and 3rd in the Ohio Valley) for having 2 good games in a row. I just used the Ohio Valley as example because most of you probably did not know that it existed but look it up this happens all the time, and it is even worse when the best team in the conference misses an at large bid, they then have one team representing their entire conference that is not even the best team in it. Leave the conf. tourney to the big boys, I would rather see the regular season winner of these conferences get an automatic bid for their entire body of work and make sure the best team goes to represent those conferences.

Jerseys

Does anyone remember when running backs in the NFL had more life? With that question who would pick up Tomlison or Westbrook? I think both could go to another team and make a great addition. In saying that it is hard to see the greats in another jersey (ie Emmit).

Getting excited

I can't speak for anyone else but I am a die hard Braves fan and as much as I love march maddness the best thing about it is it enterains you until baseball season starts. As for the Braves, I have questioned a few of the moves we made this year, but far be it from me to question John Shurholtz and Frank Wren. After winning 14 division titles in a row, in 3 short years (as hard as it was to watch) they have retooled the team with youth and talent at almost every position. We have come a little closer the last 3 years with our young guys to competeing to win the division again. I think this year we make a legit run at it. That being said the Mets and Marlins both got a lot better and everyone knows how good the Phillies are. I am looking forward to seeing the number 1 overall prospect in MLB Jason Heyward split some time in left, along with the first full season of Tommy Hanson, I think these guys are the future of our orginization and they are poised to help us make another long run starting within the next few years. Can't wait for opening day. Go Bravos!

Would you hire this guy?

Lets say you are the AD of Southern Fried University. You just lost your Head Coach to go to the NFL. (or you fired him) And you start the search. You are going to hire the NEXT great coach. You got a small list of candidates like Greg Schiano, Jim Harbaugh, Steve Sarkisian, and Dan Mullen... Then your assisant AD walks in and says this. (i will refer to you as "Dick") "Dick, listen to this. 90 - 27 overall record. 2 time SEC Champion. 4 time SEC East Champ. 2 time SEC coach of the year. 7-2 bowl record, and Dick, the guy has gone to a bowl game every year he has been a head coach." then you (dick) would reply, "theirs no way we could get a guy like that." "yea, the school he is at is starting to get unhappy with him because he lost 5 ball games last year." So Dick, what other information do you need about this Head Coach to know if he is somebody you would absolutely love to have representing your program.

Has he ever been on probation? nope, actually he is one of the most respected coaches in all of college football.

Any personal scandals? actually his wife is the water girl and the only time he makes the papers is when he is either speaking at a church, going on a mission trip, and when they adopted their second child from the urkaine and she has a rare disorder.

Can the guy recruit? His recruiting classes average in the top 5 year in and year out.

So Dick? Dont be a Dick. If your a Georgia fan stand behind Mark Richt. Back him up and show your support. Go into this year with moderate expectations because thats the biggest problem. Your expectations. You hadnt won a National Championship in close to 30 years so dont expect to compete for one every year. to quote Saban (i cant believe im doing that) "It's a process." before you want to go and start dog cussing richt look at UT and Auburn. The coaches they hired at the time they hired them had a combined Head Coaching record of 22-39... We are as stable of a program as you can get. Richt has coached 9 years at UGA and won the SEC title twice. thats 22% of the time. And this is his first time ever being a Head Coach. Enough with the bullshit! Mark Richt is one of the hottest young coaches in college football. 3 years ago we (Dawgs) were worried sick that Miami was going to steal him from us and now after 1 8-5 season your ready to send him packing? Nah, not me. Richt can go 7-5 next year and he still will have my support going into 2011.

(if Richt goes 2010 7-5, then 2011 6-6 - i want his ass Fired)

Ha ha ha awesome!

Curling

The Washington Post has a great article on curling today. You can read it HERE. But let me do you a favor and stop you. This article about curling will be far better of a read, But first let me quote this dip shit (a person that has been dipped in shit) a couple of times.

They're chanting and doing the wave inside the curling venue at the Vancouver Olympics, and the players are having to adjust – HOLLY SHIT!! Olympic athletes are having to adjust to the F’in Wave? The Wave?
Like an NFL quarterback preparing for a playoff game on the road – really? Your telling me a curler in a 5500 person arena, that does the wave, has anything in common at all with a QB in a road playoff game?
On Saturday night, the crowd broke into a spontaneous rendition of "O Canada" toward the end of Canada's men's match against Britain. Members of both teams agreed it was a great moment – Yea, I bet it is very similar to when Virginia Tech comes out to “Sandman” by Metalica and you have over 85 thousand people (some so crazy they will shoot a bunch of people during class) screaming and bouncing up and down. Can you imagine “setting up” to send the “rock” down to land in the “house” while 5,500 liberal tree hugging Canadians sing O’Canada?

I don’t know about you but I’m actually starting to like this curling stuff. Yesterday I was screaming YAR!! YAR!! As the Americans tried to hold on to the win. Tonight the Americans will take on Chinamen and I will be fist pumin in my living room when those slant eyed yellow commie bastards try to stand in the way of an American Curling GOLD. I don’t know if it will be seen on NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, or USA but you bet your sweet ass I will be watching and screaming YAR!! (if anybody can tell me what the hell yar means and/or why they scream it; it would be greatly appreciated)

Tiger

Tiger Woods is about to give his press conference and I am sick and tired of hearing everyone say who he “owes” an apology too. He don’t owe us shit. And every single hypocrite in the media that is bashing him over and over and over needs to take a real long look at themselves. As soon as Tim Tebow gets a piece of ass I suspect that we will have the same thing out of him. That’s what happens. These supper star athletes and celebrates grow up, normally, one of two ways. Either poor or sheltered. The poor ones do stupid shit like fight dogs, shoot themselves in the leg, beat their girl friend up, etc… the sheltered ones are a little different, of course. They, on the other hand, never were able to do “fun” stuff, like have a period of their life where they do drugs, sleep with several different women, get an STD, stay drunk for a month, etc… so when these guys get really on their own (and their really never own their own until their daddy dies – ie Michael Jordan) they go nuts, pun intended. Tiger was making over a 100 million dollars a year. That’s just shy of 2 million a week. Now I want you guys to think about this for a minute. Put yourself in Tigers shoes. You are a kid that grew up with a father that was about as demanding as you can imagine. You had zero personal life. Then you go off to Stanford and become friends with a bunch of rich douche bags but still all you are doing is playing golf. Every day – all day. And then you have sex for the first time, you lose your virginity at 19 (im assuming he lost his about 19). Over the next decade you become one of the most popular athletes in the world, not the south, not the nation, in the WORLD!! You have women throwing themselves on you. You can afford to put these women up anywhere you want. “I’m gonna be in England next week, want to join me? I’ll fly you out.” I mean really, think about this for a second. Think about a nerd, a black nerd, that plays golf – getting any white woman he wants. Tiger says he is “addicted to sex” hell Tiger, I would be too.. I just cant afford to be.

A perfect fit

Mount Rushmore of the SEC

What if they were carving out 4 faces in Stone Mountain to represent football in the South. (not just the SEC) Football in the South is religion and Atlanta thought that stone mountain was getting kind of boring and to beef up the attraction they decided to make a Mount Rushmore of Football in the South. So the director of operations of Stone Mountain called me and asked that Southern Fried Shit make the call on who gets to be put on it... So here is 3 out of 4. help me out with the 4th. and of course feel free to make a suggestions on any of my 3 that you disagree with.

Bear Bryant
Bobby Bowden
Eddie Robinson

UPDATE!! here are some ideas that i have gotten for the Mountain. click on the name and you will go to their wiki page

Texas to the Big 10?

Will Texas go to the Big 10? Would they? Your first impression is to say No, but, the talks will not die. And now the Pac 10 is pitching em also. If Texas does go to the BIg 10 then obviously this opens up a spot in the Big 12. Who do they go after? my first hunch would be TCU. Then let the Pac 10 go after 2 of the Boise st, Utah, or Byu. BUT!! what if the Big 12 got Arkansas? who would the SEC pick up? FSU and Georgia Tech would be my first 2 choices and i think GT would be my first. From a football stand point GT would not benefit. They would be playing much tougher competition BUT in basketball, where GT excels, they would have a huge up side. It would basically be uk instead of clemson, duke, unc, nc state, wake forest, etc... What will happen? Does Texas make the move? Which 2 out of the 3 (utah, boise, byu) would like to see in the Pac 10? would you rather GT or FSU in the SEC if Arkansas left?

Quick Note

every year i scramble to get in a fantasy league. i jump on the first one available and then better and better ones come available. so i end up in 4 or 5 leagues and its not as much fun as being in 1 and investing all the time that you have on fantasy stuff to be able to spend it on that one. so here is what im putting out there and let me know if you guys are interested. stay in what ever league your in now, if your in a good one, AND/OR lets have 1 league that is taken very serious. we could use this blog as a way to talk smack. A 10 or 12 man league consisting of the people that post/read this blog ie. Me, Culpepper, Jody, Rusty, Reese, Starrett, Pulley, and Matt T. this would leave 4 "at large" spots for anyone that we suggest. Just throwing this out there. i know most of you are already in leagues and i was in some of the leagues that yall were in. You have to admit that not everybody took it serious. Let me know what yall are thinking...

Happy Tuesday

David Hale has a post on his blog (David Hale is a beat writer on the Bulldogs - he has a blog that is a real good read. he is very informed and is NOT a Ga fan so you get a non biased approach) - his last couple of post have been very very good. THIS ONE is about the how the conferences stack up against each other in several different aspects(recuriting, bowl games, players in NFL, just a whole bunch of shit) and it was shocking to me where the ACC ends up... I would love to here your thoughts on this... AND then check out THIS ONE where he really dives in to the difference between a 5 and 3 star guy. you will enjoy both of these write ups...

Jody posed the question about who will make the best QB out of this years draft? Here is what Kiper and McCshay have on their lists, let me know if yours is different.

Kiper's Board McCshay's Board
Bradford Bradford
Clausen Clausen
McCoy McCoy
LeFevour Pike
Tebow Tebow

Sam Bradford is 6-4 223. I did not know that. I thought he was shorter and smaller. At of all these QB's Bradford to me seems like he has the best arm. i also like the fact that he played at a big school. i understand that you got your joe flacos out there but they are few and far between. Let me be clear here. I DO NOT PICK A QB IN FIRST ROUND!!! There is 5 OT's randed in the top 32 and i would take the 5th one before i picked up a QB. so if im asked who i would prefer... its Bradford. if im a GM and drafting, then i probably pick up Tony Pike @ 23 years old and 6-6 and see if i can groom him into something. if i dont have a QB and i have to have a QB right now. then i trade for one. i would rather have a Pennington type QB than to start a rookie that is not going to play good that im paying more than anybody on the team.

State of the Program

I am going to grade the state of programs. Like where a program is now and where it is heading. Since this is based on mostly opinion, if not all, it should be interesting to see where you guys come in on this…

Alabama – A+ I want to say that Saban is doing something dirty up in T-town and that they will be back on probation in 3 or 4 years, but nothing in his past would suggest such. I also would like to say that I don’t think he will be there in 5 years but after the ND job came open (ND paid out more than Saban is currently making now) and not even a rumor came up about Saban even being interested, I guess I cant even say that anymore. Maybe its time that we (I) just accept the fact that he is just that good. I may not like him. I may think he is the anti-Christ, but absoulty nothing suggest anything other Saban in T-Town and Bama in the SEC championship regularly. Keep in mind, we are just now getting to the players that Saban recruited. He has had back to back undefeated regular seasons with Shula’s guys…

Auburn – B- The tigers are on their way back up. With a great recruiting class and an energized coaching staff, things are looking up for the Tigers. Here is what they got going against them… Right now the cupboard is pretty bare. And by the time the coaching staff can get a deep enough team to compete in the SEC then Malzone will be accepting a Head Coaching job somewhere else. That will be devastating to the program. After Chizik fails on his next Coordinator hire and the Tigers drop off on offense then Chizik will be replaced and who ever comes in will have a much much more talented team. Auburn is 7 years out from competing for an SEC title.

Tennessee – C- Alright, I love the fact that the Vols got Dooley but lets be honest here… The program is in pretty bad shape right now. Dooley will do good enough to go 7-6 maybe 8-5 and in 3 or 4 years the Vols will be looking for another Head Coach. This time the timing will be better and they will get a proven Coach that will carry the program back to where it belongs.

Georgia – B+ Two words… Todd Grantham. Anybody who pays attention saw that Ga can score points. Bobo is growing into a pretty damn good offensive coordinator but the Dawgs cant stop anybody. Well see if Grantham is worth 750K a year and if the Dawgs are competing for a SEC title or if Richt is on his way out. If Grantham doesn’t work out then the Dawgs could be in bad trouble.

LSU – C+ Les Miles is being exposed as not a good in game coach. The guy can recruit like hell but it just seems like when the game is on the line that your waiting for Miles to screw up instead of man up. How far will LSU have to drop before they make a switch will determine how long LSU stays a C+

Florida – A I’m not sure if I’m just hoping but something is going on down in the swamp. Meyer takes a leave and then the next day says he will be coaching this year.. this is after he loses Strong to Louy. Then he hires Edwards and then Edwards leaves for the Bills a month later. Like I say, maybe I’m just hoping.. but with UT down, and Fla having to play Bama in T-town this year.. Ga has a good west schedule.. maybe the Gayterds don’t make it back to Atlanta. BUT!! As long as Meyer is on the side lines, you have to give them a A.

(for reese cup)
Georgia Tech – C- Anytime a team can get a couple of weeks to prepare for the triple option they normally shut it down. Paul Johnson is a great coach, but I need to see a little more before I give Tech a B. this year was one of the Dawg’s worse years on defense and they shut PJ down. If you cant beat your in state rival when they are down then you damn sure cant beat them when they are up.

QB'S in the SEC

I read an article in the chattanooga times free press this morning about qb's in the SEC... you can read it HERE i got the link from senator blutarsky's blog GET THE PICTURE one of my favorite blogs on the web, other than southern fried shit. alright, so now that i have given credit to where i got the inspiration and most of the data for this article(since im a journalist now i have to respect my peers and give them credit)lets get on to the story..

Here is how i see the SEC lining up in the QB position...

#1 Arkansas - Mallet is obviously the most talented QB in the SEC. i dont think i should get any arguments here
#2 Alabama - really its a no brainer at #2. i mean the guy has a NC ring on his hand and in my mind, should have gotten the MVP of the SEC championship game.
Here is where it starts to get interesting...
#3 Florida - How can i put a 1st year starter over some returning starters?
#4 USC - I think Garcia will get a lot better this year. he is smart and has a great head coach that i think has groomed him and he has potential to have a break out year... or he may look like he did against uconn
#5 LSU - Jesus! how in the hell do i have Jordan Jefferson at #5???
#6 Auburn - I'm going out a limb here and picking Cam Newton (or lab top)
#7 Kentucky - Hartline is back and is a pretty consistest QB but nothing special
#8 Georgia - not because im a homer.. and really not because i think the QB battle is better than the ones under here.. really because i think GA's offensive line is better than the remaining teams that dont know who their QB will be. thats fair. isnt it?
#9 Mississippi State - Chris Relf looked good against Ol Miss last year and with Dan Mullin.. im almost tempted in moving Miss ST up a couple of notches.
#10 Vandy - Jordan Rodgers is Arron Rodgers' brother. i didnt know this. but now that i do i cant put them at the bottom
#11 Ol Miss - Nathan Stanley and Raymon cotton have never came out of my mouth before and i know nothing about them. i do know that jevan sneed was a very talented QB and Nutt helped him look like shit so imagine what they will do with a new guy
#12 Tennessee - I'm sorry rusty. its not personal, UT has a 3 way battle for the QB spot and the program is on its 3rd Head Coach in 3 years.. that normally doesnt fair will for a rookie QB.

Huh?

Today on the Bleacher Report, their are some interesting things about the SEC... Here are some quotes from the article that was about if the SEC is getting boring because of it being so top heavy with Florida and Alabama. give me your thoughts.

Mark Richt doesn't have the talent or the drive to overtake Florida this year. He and the dogs seem content to simply have "Winning seasons" and bowl games and some are wondering where the hunger is on this team.

Tennessee is still rebuilding and changing regimes yet again. This is the third coach in three years and that can't translate into a big season in anyone's book.

Auburn? Please folks, did you miss the late season melt down? If anyone thinks one recruiting class makes a difference in one year, change your diaper and quit getting fairy tales read to you. While they may be improving, they're not in Alabama's league yet.

I dont know about you guys but the SEC is all but boring to me. While we had a rematch in the SEC championship game we still had extremly close games through out the year. I understand that Florida and Bama are the favorites to play for it again this year but "boring"? really? was watching Bama having to block a field goal in the final seconds to beat UT boring? and that same evening watching Florida struggle at Mississippi State, was that boring? and that was just one day in the SEC. evey conference game Bama played last year they were a favorite to win and my close friend jody who is a ridiculous bama fan knew that no matter who they were playing that Bama better be ready because anybody in the SEC can beat anybody else. and as long as we have that, then, to quote yoda... boring the SEC is not.

Odds to win 2011 Super bowl

the odds to win next year's super bowl are out and i got 2 that look pretty good. PAT's are at 10:1 and the Giants are at 30:1. 30:1 sounds pretty damn strong. check the odds out and let me know what you guys think are the best bets. the link is HERE

Ok Ok Ok

The super bowl was good, real good. Brees did a great job. Great story. Katrina was repaired. A franchise was fixed. blah blah blah blah...

Georgia hired the 3rd final coach from Vandy. he was the LB's coach their and more importantly he was the recruiting coordinator. Now i know that Vandy doesnt top the head lines with 5star guys year in and year out but it appears from the outside (and i couldnt be any further outside) that CMR is putting together a pretty damn good staff. after watching that super bowl and seeing a 3-4 totally screw up the best QB in the league was fun. I got a good feeling about this year...

sorry for the lack of post recently. i promise to get some new shit for you soon.

The Skinny on UGA's class of 2010

Ok, so UGA limped to the recruiting finish line this year. The most disappointing part of the day (which most of us knew was coming) happened at 9:45am when the top player in the state Da'Rick Rogers confirmed reports and sent his LOI to the University of Tennessee. I really think Rogers will make an immediate impact at the collegiate level and this one hurts. Physically, the guy could step on the field on Sunday's at age 18. Mentally, I'm not so sure. The last I heard he still hadn't achieved a qualifying SAT score. I'm sure Tennessee will find a way to get him enrolled, but if they don't, this one may not be over guys. The whole thing smells fishy and if it were Lane Kiffin instead of Derrick Dooley, I'd be convinced that something was up. Basically Tennessee offered Rogers' best friend and QB Nash Nance a scholarship two weeks ago hoping Rogers would follow him. Nance's dad if extremely close to Rogers and a father figure type. In my opinion, he used Rogers to improve the level of school his son would get an offer too. Nance will never touch the field at Tennessee. Anyway, enough about DR. We had two other long time commitments de-commit this past week as well. Deon Rogers and Nickell Robey both backed out of their commitments and are headed to Louisville and USC respectively. Rogers is a 3* LB and Robey is a 4* CB. These guys were never "solid" commits though and we anticipated them changing when Willie was fired. On to the good news, Alec Ogletree, Garrison Smith, TJ Stripling, Brent Benedict among others are now Dawgs. We didn't just try and fill up the class with second tier guys once players started backing out. This opens us up for a full class next year, which we haven't had in several years. One of my favorite dawgs already is Kenarious Gates. He was only offered on Monday night and he immediately switched his commitment from Kentucky to his "dream school". He is a 6-5" 300lb offensive lineman with good feet and good smarts. The story I read about him talked a lot about how he loves UGA and is grateful to have a chance to play for his home state Bulldawgs. I love this kind of kid. We had two surprises go our way today in Michael Thornton, a 4* DT that will probably play the nose position in the 3-4 and an unranked 6-6 WR named Lonnie Outlaw. This guy is a "sign and place" kid that will play for GMC and get his grades in order. The good thing about him is that he is Nick Marshall's (2011 QB already offered) cousin and they are very close. That's a quick recap of UGA's signing day coverage. Go Dawgs!!!

Speak up

I will be counting on our recruiting insiders John and Brad to bring us their overall perspectives on how this years recruiting ended up.

Glad you guys made it for the first time.......but now the honeymoon is over!

Don't get me wrong I like the Saints and Drew Breeeeeeeez almost as much as I like Payton Manning, I would be happy with either team winning this game. With that being said, here are the reasons the Colts will win. Before we get to the on the field stuff let's just pretend that both teams are equal at every position.

Off the field tale of the tape

1. The Saints at the beginning of the season set their goal to be IN the Super Bowl. Since the NFC Championship game they have been celebrating like they are the world champs. I cannot imagine how hard it is to work all season long to accomplish your goal and then after you accomplish it turn around and set a new one with two weeks to build the same motivation that is required to win the Super Bowl.

2. Everyone loves the story of how the city of New Orleans has rallied around the Saints, I will admit it is a good story, BUT that was over 4 years ago how long is a team supposed carry their fans before the debt is re payed, it is added pressure that the Saints surely don't need. "Win one for the Gipper" would not have meant as much if they would have told Sayers that for four years in a row.

On the field

1. The Colts are short handed without Dwight Freeny (we all know what he can do) and Jerrad Powers who started at corner all year but did not play in the Championship game ( the reason Braylon had a walk in touch down on a backup CB) I will admit their D is looking not too hot. But they are still better than the Saints D. The Saints have relied heavily on turnovers all year, a category which they were in the top teams in the league, despite that their defense is still ranked 25th. So I think Colts still have the edge on D because with Payton not turning the ball over it will be a long day for them.

2. Both teams seem to have an equally explosive offense but this is not the case. The saints rely on long down field passes and swing passes but do not have much of a passing for a 3rd 8 type situation with most their passes being 12 yards or more I suspect the Colts ( especially if Powers plays) will keep everything in front of them, and have LB's that are athletic enough not to let the swing passes eat them up. True the Saints have a better running game but it is not better than the Jets or Ravens and the Colts shut both of them down. And don't try to tell me well the Saints shut down AP because they did not he had huge game despite his 3 fumbles. Manning on the other is a wizard behind the center. You never know where the ball is going and even if you get lucky before the snap and guess the right formation he will just see your linebacker smiling and change the play to go the other direction.

In summation

Colts 28 Saints 17

Super Bowl Week

Whats up people? its super bowl week and we got to figure out whats going to happen. i have been looking at several different things. the thing im looking at right now is when these 2 teams play a team that is ranked in the top 5 in passing offense, and the colts have played 3 teams ranked in the top 5. Houston twice, and New England. in these games the defense of the colts have given up an average of 356 yards in the air and 26 points. all 3 of these games the colts had dwight freeney, one of the best pass rushers in the game. i would have to think that the colts' defense is not going to be as good when the ball is in the air with out freeney rushing the passer. so now we are giving brees extra time to throw the ball against a team that gives up 350+ passing yards when playing the best passing teams. now the saints have only played a top 5 passing team once this year, the pats. brady only had 237 yards and the pats only scored 17 points. it was the 4th best job the saints did on defense this year and it was against one of the best passing teams and qb's. so what i got from this is that the saints defense do better against better passing teams. combine that with the fact that freeney is out (im assuming he is going to be out) and i have to give the edge to the saints on defense in this game.

offense and special teams report to come... also a report on the "if" factor.
