Everything but the kitchen sink

Well, apparently so do the Falcons. Now as you guys know I am neither a Falcons fan nor an Alabama fan. That being said even though the Falcons aren’t my team I moved near Atlanta when I was 11 and pull for them when they are not playing the Bucs.

This was one of my friends facebook status last night. “ Hey, I'm excited about Julio Jones being a Falcon, but I can't believe what was given up to get him. Dimitroff gave this year's 1st, 2nd, and 4th round picks, and next year's 1st and 4th rounders. Also, he gave up the Hawks 1st round pick in 2012, two of the Braves top pitching prospects, all of the Thrashers, and a Tyler Perry movie to be named later. It just seems a bit much to me.”

I can’t help but agree with this. For years I have told my friends that are Falcons fans when they got rid of Jenkins and got a legit number 2 receiver (Julio is more than a legit #2) they would be getting somewhere. However I did not mean ignore the glaring weakness in the secondary and trade any chance of getting a decent corner or saftey for the next two years. Most shocking is that Dimitroff was raised better than this, Bilichek would never do this, that is why he has 3 rings.

With all that being said Julio will be fun to watch and an instant fantasy stud, but do you guys think the price was too high?

  1. First things first....someone get us a real shot of those tittays!!!

I think the Julio is a game changer and the Falcons passing game just got much better. They have needed a #2 receiver and, as Brad said, Julio is more than qualified for that role. To quote ESPN radio: You have to go and get what your lead guy needs and Matt Ryan needs another receiver. Only time will truly tell if the Falcons gave up too much. Just like all draft picks, Julio has a lot to prove. Brian Billick was on Mike & Mike this morning and was asked how much of a gamble do you take when the player that you really want is still available. Do you sit back and hope that he is still available at your pick or do you go after him and make it happen? Clearly, there were two bad ass receivers in this years draft - AJ & Julio. With AJ being gone, the Falcons realized that Julio wouldn't be there at the end of the first round so they made a move.

  2. Agree. Let's see those big'uns.

On to Julio. He'll be a great receiver, but I feel they gave up too much to get him. I hope they go on to win several super bowls because of this trade up, but I doubt that will happen. That's a lot of picks even for a stud like Julio.

  3. I do think the price was to high.. I remember back in the mid 90's when Schuerholz would trade someone and I would be like, 'what the fuck is he thinking?' and then 9 months later be like, 'god damn i love Mr. Schuerholz' - I hope I am saying the same thing about Dimitroff. I said yesterday that this was being talked about but that i didn't think it would happen because of the same thing you mentioned brad... just doesn't seem bilichick like. That said, now that we got him I am fucking pumped about him and I look forward to seeing him in a falcons jersey.

  4. and when you see DaQuaun (sp) Bowers still available where you would have drafted... it just made it a little tougher to swallow.

  5. Sawthis post and copied it:

Who is to say a better receiver will be available next year? I don't think the deal deserved a 1st next year, but if you want to get to SB next season, or beyond, you gotta make moves like this. Just go back to the game vs. GB, why did Falcons lose? 1) They couldn't cover the slot. Ok, that could be solved in the draft with good value pick at 91. 2) Roddy White had coverage rolled to his side the entire game, which ultimately led to a pick 6. With Julio now, there will be a threat on the opposite side that defenses will have to respect. This will pay great dividends in the run game also.

  7. The problem with the draft- in general - is that teams are gambling MILLIONS of dollars that their picks will pan out. This isn't a shot at Cam Newton, but Jon Gruden said last night that you honestly don't know what you are going to get with him. Will he be the first one in the weight room every morning? Will he study the most film? How hard will he work? You can apply that statement to every player in the draft.
