All this talk about recruiting and coaching and all that has got me wondering who are the best coaches and who are the guys that need to go? I will provide you a list of my 5 best, 5 most underrated, and 5 most overrated at this time.
5 best.
1. Nick Saban- As much as it pains me to say this being and Auburn fan I have too. Having that much success at 2 different SEC schools, and turning around a program with no depth and thin on talent that quickly he is actually worth every penny.
2. Pete Carroll- If for no other reason he continually gets the best QB in the nation to come sit on his bench for 2 or 3 years then sends them on their way to the NFL(with this year being the lone exception). Not to mention no one is more consistent in the BCS games, yeah I know he lost a big one but how many has he won?
3. Urban Meyer- The only reason I have Urban behind these two guys is that USC and Alabama were in shambles when they took over and Urban took over a team that already the pieces of a contender put in place. Ron Zook is one of the best recruiters in the nation . Urban was more capable of coaching up the talent that was already there.
4.Mack Brown- Consistently one of the best recruiters and nicest guys in college football. He has had some GREAT players come through there, for years he had trouble converting his on the field talent into actual national championship hopes, I think he has since figured out how to do that.
5. Jim Tressell- I know I know I hate him as much as you guys do, but he owns the Big Ten and even though he doesn't always win the big game he always gets to one. He wins old school with Defense and running the ball and you have to give him credit for changing that a little when he got a QB that could more. The fact he is evolving his offensive strategy ( which has always been the knock on him) means big trouble for the big ten.
5 most underrated.
1. Gary Patterson- I know he is a hot topic lately but news flash this is not the first year that TCU has been a great team. He has always been a few pieces away from being able to compete in any conference and with two great years in a row and some young players to boot, watch out for the frogs to consistently try and push its way in the top 10 year after year.
2. David Cutcliffe- SEC fans know how good this guy is especially UT fans. I don't know if you noticed but Duke mattered in the ACC this year, and yes I do mean in football. I would say that Duke is on the rise and could compete to win their side within the next 4 years, but I won't, because Cutcliffe will have a much better job by then.
3. Mike Leetch- I know this bad timing for old Mike but if you at his track record he shouldn't be jobless for long. Everywhere he has been they were better when he left refer to Valdosta State, Kentucky, and now you can add TT to that list. Athletes, mainly QB's and WR's will come find the guy no matter where he is, and they are smart to do so.
4. Bo Pellini- Nebraska got a steal with this guy as their head coach and the impact was immediate. The only reason he is number 4 on my list instead of 2 is because it takes longer for defensive genius to build his defense than an offensive guru to build and offense, but I think we all saw this year that the black shirts are on their way back.
5. Houston Nutt- He has never really had a superior team in the SEC with the Razorbacks but no one was excited about playing them. I think Snead's bad was a blessing to him still going to and winning the Cotton Bowl and getting Snead back. Give him a few years to stack some recruits and Archie will be proud.
5 most overrated
1. Les Miles- The wheels are slowly starting too fall off at LSU there are so many times you can win games by not knowing how much time is on the clock and throwing hail mary's. LSU is a built in recruiting mecca every player in Louisiana( where there are some outstanding high school football player) dreams of playing for LSU is not hard to get players yet he keeps getting the wrong ones.
2. Paul Johnson- I know, I know back to back ACC championship games, so what! Have you seen the ACC lately? The option out dated you don't need speed, or strength, or even athletes to stop it. Only discipline. I think he has proved he will never win a big bowl game, a month to prepare for the triple option equals complete shutdown of the triple option. Paul will be back in D1AA in 5 years.
3. Mark Richt- This brings me the most pleasure to type, not because of Mark I have met him and he is a great guy, but because of all you obnoxious UGAy fans( thanks Pulley I am using that one now). Every year his recruiting class is surrounded by the likes of Florida, Texas, USC, Oklahoma and LSU. Yet they have one thing UGA does not, a crystal trophy shaped like a football. No team in my opinion has had recruiting classes as good as UGA's for a constant period of time and has no titles to show for it.
4. Bobby Patrino- Yes he had a couple of years at Louisville. Then didn't cut it in the NFL and the reason is against NFL or SEC defenses you can't throw the ball 60 times a game and expect to be consistent. Which is why he ride the Arkansas thing until he sees the the grim future of what he brought to the program and he will bail for a Pac 10 job long before Arkansas crumbles.
5. Steve Spurrier- Yes I know I hate to say it as much as you hate to hear it. Has SC gotten better, yes they have but they didn't bring in the old ball coach to make them better, Lou Holtz did that, they brought him in to win, which he hasn't done in an awful long time I wonder if he forgot how. The days of Danny W and 5 wide are gone he just won't get those players at SC. I give him years before he practicing his swing to try and make the Champions tour.
Houston Nutt? over rated? are you kidding me??? Les Miles is on the hot seat and his own team hates him, how is he over rated? Mark Richt has one of the best records of any first time head coach and he is over rated? and the old ball coach, i have to say that he is leaning on the over rated side in a "current" list. as for all time, he is right up there in the Best category.
ReplyDeleteLes Miles is without a doubt the worst coach in college football. He is about as bad as Ron Jirsa was at coaching basketball. (For those of you who don't know Mr. Jirsa, he was a Tubby Smith disciple who replaced him at UGA when Tubby bolted for Kentucky).
